Iowa State hosted a rising junior offensive lineman from Minnesota on two occasions last year and is battling with a mix of several Power-5 schools for the big man.
Lakeville South standout Riley Mahlman, who traveled to Ames for a summer camp in 2018 and followed that up with a visit for the West Virginia game, has been highly sought after by coaches from around the Upper Midwest.
In addition to his I-State offer, Mahlman has P5 offers from Iowa, Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, Ohio State and Wisconsin. Mahlman is a three-star offensive tackle with a 5.7 Rivals rating. He's considered the 31st overall offensive tackle prospect nationally.
For now, it seems the Cyclones have some making up to do to get back into Mahlman’s mix.
“This summer, I attended camps at Wisconsin, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Northwestern and Minnesota,” said Mahlman. “I wasn’t able to make it down (to Iowa State) for a camp. I haven’t been in contact with the staff for a month or two and we haven’t had much connection. I think they were in contact with my coach a couple times over the summer, though.”
The 6-foot-8, 271-pound Mahlman said he still has a favorable opinion of ISU, however. A game-day visit to Ames this fall remains a possibility.
“I know they’re and up-and-coming program and had a good year last season,” he said. “After a bunch of not so good ones, I think they’re really turning it around. Another game would be fun. The schedule is all so busy and it’s hard to get down to games, since it’s the day after we play. But I’d love to get down for a game.”
The Minnesota high schooler said he’s focused on a number of facets of his game over the summer months.
“I’m still working on footwork and technique,” Mahlman said. “I think I’ve gotten better at my pass sets. Coaches like the track I’m going on and the athleticism in me. They say not to lose my athleticism, stay how I am and keep getting stronger.”
