Since offering a scholarship last spring, Iowa State has continued to keep tabs on a big defender in the Class of 2020 with multiple offers from Power-5 programs.
Southfield (Mich.) A&T junior Bryce Austin said the Cyclones have remained in touch and would like to have him down on a visit.
“They send mail to my house all the time,” said Austin. “The coach that’s been reaching out to me has been Coach D.K. (McDonald) and we talked (earlier this month). He said they want me to come down for a Junior Day either on February 2nd or March 9th. I could probably go to the one on March 9th.
The 6-foot-2, 285-pound Austin also has P5 offers from the likes of Boston College, Michigan State, Minnesota, Missouri, Pittsburgh and Syracuse. Out of those schools, he says BC and Purdue have shown the most interest.
That could change if Austin makes the trek to ISU in a month and a half and the defensive lineman sees everything first-hand.
“I really want to check out their facilities, get to know the coaches and how they interact with the players,” he said. “I would want to have a good relationship with the coaches wherever I go. I want to talk to the players and find out how it is down there. I want to check out the campus.”
Listed as a strong-side defensive end in the Rivals database, Austin said he’d be pegged for a spot inside if he ends up with the Cyclones.
“They haven’t really said anything lately, but last time we talked about it they were saying I’d be an interior defensive lineman,” he said. “I think I bring a lot of explosiveness off the ball and physicality. I can use my hands to get off blocks and get into the backfield, then use my speed to chase plays down the field or get to the quarterback when he’s scrambling.”
A Rivals three-star recruit, Austin has 5.6 rating and is considered the 25th overall prospect in Michigan for the 2020 class.
