Paul and I have had some private conversations about the funding reports. I was blathering on about how some expenses don't affect performance on the field. I thought of a lot of things that fit in that category. Then I got to thinking about what spending would make a difference if we had more to spend.
If we are going to argue that we are underfunded relative to our peers, where would we spend additional money if we had it available for football? I know there are good answers out there, but it's not obvious to me.
So imagine we had $5 million more to spend per year. Where would we spend it? If we had $10 or $20 million more, what would our priorities be that would make us a better football team. Can we buy success?
I think this would be a more productive discussion than quibbling about our spending when we have little details breaking down where the football budget is allocated both for us and relative to our peers.
