Some random thoughts on the game:
1. On a positive note, I thought the crowd was good. Stadium looked great.
2. I didn't want Gameday and I'm going to be fine if we don't get it again for awhile.
3. I'll be totally fine if "the alliance" means the end of Cyhok. They just have too many a-hole fans. Multiple people just running their mouths on the way out of the stadium. Just to do it. Why can't you just be happy with your win rather than running up to some stranger and rubbing it in their face?
4. I just marvel at what Freerentz has done at iowa. That wasn't a great team that beat us. But man, they just do not make mistakes. Every kickoff a touchback, every punt pinned us deep, no turnovers, no penalties. I'm guessing iowa saves all their mistakes for Purdue and Northwestern like always.
5. Seeing a lot of backups in the 4th makes me believe that there won't be a huge dropoff next season.
Some positional thoughts:
QB: Woof. Purdy picked a bad game to melt down. I get that some of those picks went through WR hands, but the throws were off target. Usually high and behind. Purdy looked like he was in a daze all game. And the pressure wasn't that big. He had time and just couldn't make accurate throws. The pick in the first half, all he had to do was lead Scates inside. Purdy deserved to be benched. Everyone poo pooed the UNI game, but it looks like the reason we didn't open it up is because we were scared Purdy would turn the ball over. Dekkers looked good and I'm glad he got some snaps. I still believe that Purdy will turn it around now that the pressure is off and he'll end up playing well eventually. But yesterday, he made easy throws look hard.
RB: Breece did OK, but we've still not seen last year's Breece. I don't know if the hype got to him or what. There weren't a lot of holes there, but that fumble is unforgivable. I wish that they'd have given Jirehl Brock equal carries.
WR: Where was last year's Hutchinson? Milton disappeared again. Pretty much no one made plays. Doesn't help when the QB is putting balls in bad spots, but I was not impressed with this group.
TE: It's pretty obvious that Kolar was more of a decoy than anything. He's definitely not himself. Rus did fine. Allen is just an OK player and not a difference maker.
OL: I thought they did a lot better than vs UNI. There were holes and the protection was OK other than the one series. They need to clean up some penalties, but I think they'll be fine.
DL: Awesome job. These guys got after it all game. They stuffed the run game and put pressure on Petras. I loved their rotation and thought that they had a bunch of players stand out.
LB: Another great game from Hummel. Vaughn did fine in his first start. I do feel like Rose has gotten a little too beefy. He got beat to the corner a couple times by Goodson, who I would not consider fast. I feel like Andrews put a little too much weight on him. He's not making the plays this year that he was in the past.
DB: They did fine. Not a lot to mention here. They tackled well and coverage was good. The one TD pass was a perfect ball.
KR: No returns.
PR: Milton needs replaced here. He makes bad decisions. As much as Campbell has done well, I will never understand his PR philosophy. Iowa used PR to get field position and we look like we're allergic to the ball. If we're going to fair catch everything or let the ball roll, then we need to be going after the block every time. It's maddening. If you don't trust Milton, get someone else in there or recruit a true PR. We're leaving yards on the table.
K: I thought that they did fine. At the very least, they fixed the kickoff issue with Mevis.
P: Does Dunn have pictures of Campbell's wife naked or something? I remember a few years ago going to the Gridiron practice and thinking Rivera was a better Punter. Today, watching them warm up, I thought Shook was better. Dunn will uncork one from time to time, but he'll shank one just as often. He's not consistent and honestly, not very good. I would have told him to go ahead and move on after last year. It doesn't make sense to me. As good as the staff is at evaluating talent, they seem to have a blind spot at the kicking positions.
