On April 1, I wrote a check to the Linn County Treasurer for a car title transfer fee. This wasn't mailed, I was at the office in Cedar Rapids and physically handed them the check. As of today, nearly 4 weeks later, it still hasn't been cashed.
I have had the same experience over the years when writing checks for car registrations and property taxes in other counties---Clinton, Cedar and Story. Many times, checks are held by the Treasurer for 7 to 10 days.
I found that particularly surprising at property tax time. If they held my check, they held hundreds if not thousands of others, and you'd be talking a lot of tax money just sitting in a safe at the Treasurers office. Or I assume they would at least put them in a safe.
Why wouldn't county officials be taking this money to a bank every day? Heck, these days there is technology available where they can scan the checks right at the office and make daily deposits.
Apparently counties have more than enough money to use, if they can wait 4 weeks to cash checks
Sorry to bring this up, but it's been awhile since we've had a football commitment to talk about
