A decade of excellence was confirmed for the Iowa State volleyball program Sunday night when the Cyclones were selected for the 2015 NCAA Volleyball Championship. ISU will travel to Madison, Wisconsin to face Miami (FL) on Thursday at 5 p.m. Should the Cyclones win, they will take on the winner of No. 6 seed Wisconsin and Oregon on Friday at 7 p.m.
Iowa State will play in its 10th-consecutive NCAA Volleyball Championship under the guidance of head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch. In those trips, ISU has won 15 matches in the tournament, including making it to the second weekend five times, highlighted by Regional Final appearances in 2008 and 2011. Prior to her tenure at Iowa State, the Cyclones had been to one NCAA Volleyball Championship (1995).
The Hurricanes of Miami come into the NCAA Volleyball Championship with a 21-9 overall record, finishing ACC play with a 14-6 mark. UM finished the season with three-straight victories, the most recent coming Friday in four sets at Georgia Tech. Miami (FL) are a strong attacking team, boasting three hitters who have posted over 300 kills on the season, led by Taylor Scott’s 3.19 kills per set. The Cyclones and Hurricanes will meet for the first time since ISU swept UM to advance to the Regional Semifinals in 2011.
The Wisconsin Badgers are the No. 6 seed for the NCAA Volleyball Championship, and enter the tournament with a 24-6 overall mark, finishing 16-4 in Big Ten play. The Badgers come into the tournament on a 12-match winning streak, which includes wins over eight teams that made the NCAA Volleyball Championship. UW are led from the setter position by Lauren Carlini. The junior, a two-time AVCA All-American and 2014 Big Ten Player of the Year, ranks seventh in the NCAA with 11.91 assists per set. Badger freshman Haleigh Nelson is 11th in the nation with her .422 hitting percentage out of the middle. Iowa State and Wisconsin last met in the second round of the 2007 NCAA Volleyball Championship, when ISU upset the Badgers in straight sets to advance to the program’s first Regional Semifinal.
The Badgers’ opponent on Thursday, Oregon, finished the regular season 16-13 and 10-10 in the Pac-12. The Ducks had to play their way into the tournament, sweeping Arizona State and Oregon State last week to ensure their spot in the field. UO is led by senior outside hitter Martenne Bettendorf, a 2014 AVCA Third-Team All-American, who is averaging 3.50 kills per set this season. The Ducks and Cyclones last met in the 2008 NCAA Volleyball Championship Regional Semifinals, where the Cyclones came from two sets down to defeat Oregon and advance to ISU’s first Regional Final.
Ticket information will be announced shortly.
