The ACC and conference perceptions over the years

In the late 70s/early 80s, wasn’t ACC football viewed as being on about the same level as the WAC? Like, it was a basketball conference and most people were fine with that?

It was a little before my time, but that’s the perception I get from what I’ve read. I guess Clemson winning the national championship in 1981 was a big deal for the conference.

Three years later BYU won a national championship in the WAC, but I know most people felt they weren’t really the best team.

I also think I’ve read on here that Missouri Valley basketball in the late 60s was seen as better than the Big 8?
