Iowa State jumped into the running with a Lone Star State safety earlier this spring and will now get a chance to host the three-star prospect on a June official visit.
Schertz (Texas) Clemens rising senior Mason Chambers, who has been assigned a 5.6 Rivals rating, said he turned the eyes of a Cyclone assistant coach during a practice session and his recruitment has picked up from there.
“I got the offer from Iowa State (three) weeks ago, right after my spring ball,” said Chambers. “They had showed up when we were in the middle of spring ball and had been keeping in touch with me, letting me know what’s going on. On the last day of spring ball, at our spring game, Coach (D.K.) McDonald watched me warm up a little bit. The next day, he called me and offered a scholarship.
“He talked about how he liked my size and that how I’m able to move being as big as I am. He really likes my footwork. He told me that he wants me to be playing the Star position, which is the middle position. I guess there are two spots left, because someone is currently committed, so that’s something to keep in mind.”
The 6-foot-1, 185-pound safety will have a chance to move himself up in the pecking order later this month when he arrives on campus for the first time to visit the school. ISU and Texas Tech are the two Power-5 offers presently on Chambers’ list, although the safety does have several in the FBS ranks.
Chambers said the early returns on the Cyclones are positive, and that he is anxious to get his first glimpse.
“It looks really good,” he said. “I’m going to be up there taking an official visit the weekend of June 14th through the 16th. I’m looking forward to checking out the coaches and the difference to how they’re talking to me over the phone and how they meet me in person, how real they are with me. I want them to be straight-up with me and talk football, tell me the chances that I’ll be able to see the field or if they’re looking for me to redshirt.”
Chambers’ position is also a need for I-State’s 2020 class and he said he likes that the defense Jon Heacock employs places an emphasis on the position.
“I like that they run three safeties out there because it’s pass-heavy, and the more they have on the field the better my chances to get out there,” he said.
“They have a really strong program going on over there and good camaraderie. They’re always together. I see that they take a lot of stuff seriously and are not just going to hand out offers to people who they think can be backups. They’re not recruiting backups and want people who can step up to play.
In addition to his scheduled visit to ISU later this month, Chambers said he’s also planning an SMU official for June 11-13. He says Texas Tech is also likely to get him for an official visit.
