A Lone Star State defensive back took his first official visit of the recruiting process this past weekend, heading to Iowa State where he said he was blown away by what he saw.
San Antonio Cornerstone Christian School rising senior Jordyn Morgan, who is a borderline top-100 player in Texas for the 2020 class, said his trip to Ames surprised him.
“I thought Ames, Iowa, was just a farmers town but it’s not,” said Morgan. “It’s a really nice community with the community on the team’s back. They really come out to support the football program on game days.
“I think the football program is going to continue to escalate in the future, because Coach (Matt) Campbell is doing a great job. Before he was there, they were 3-and-9 and now they’ve had some eight-win seasons and beaten top-10 schools. That really impresses me. You can see the way he’s turning the program and how well the players are developing.”
The 6-foot-1, 176-pound Morgan is a three-star prospect with a 5.6 Rivals rating. In addition to ISU, he has Power-5 offers from Boston College, California, Missouri and Vanderbilt to go along with several in the G5 ranks.
Safety has emerged as a big need for Iowa State in the 2020 class and Morgan has emerged as a key target at the position. He said he could figure in at either of the three positions in the depth chart.
“It’s not really just about how good are you at one position but that you’re going to have to learn all the positions,” he said. “You’re not going to be playing a certain one, but how much knowledge and how much you take it in at each position. They like how I play the ball, how I cover and how I play man. They like my closing speed on run plays, making open field tackles.”
Morgan said the academic aspect of I-State is also a strong point.
“I didn’t know how good of an Engineering program they had, so that played a big part in it,” he said. “I didn’t know I could get my Masters and Bachelor’s degree at the same time. That really changed things on the way I feel about Iowa State.”
The weekend official visit wrapped up with a conversation with the Cyclone head coach.
“He talked about how he likes my character and how I lead on and off the field,” Morgan said. “We talked about different things going on in the program. What I liked most about Coach Campbell is that most other coaches would have tried to force me to commit.
“He gave me tips on what to look for in a school. Not just for Iowa State, but for different schools. He said some schools have DB spots that are wide open and starting would be easy…don’t just go there because it’s easy, go somewhere where it’s going to be tough and a challenge for you so you can grow as a man and become a better leader.”
Morgan appears to be poised to make a decision prior to his senior season.
“I’m going to take two more visits, then I’ll be committing,” he said. “I’m talking to Mizzou right now and then the other would possibly be Boston College, Boise State or Colorado State.”
