SEATTLE – No. 14 Iowa State (8-1) earned its first win in school history over No. 1 Texas (7-1) in the ITA Indoor National Championship quarterfinals, 4-1, Saturday night. The Cyclones, who entered the match 0-26 all-time against the Longhorns, secured the highest ranked win in program history to advance to the semifinals, another program first.
Iowa State started fast by taking the crucial doubles point before getting singles wins in the No. 2, 4 and 5 spots to down the Longhorns.
With Iowa State holding a 3-1 lead in the match, No. 123 Miska Kadleckova delivered once again. The junior pushed the Cyclones through to the semifinals with a win over No. 69 MalaikaRapolu, 6-3, 6-3, for her 11th singles victory in a row and seventh win against a ranked opponent this season.
The Cyclones will take on No. 5 Georgia Sunday at 2 p.m. (CT) for a chance to play in the ITA Indoor National Championship.
HOW IT HAPPENED
For the second day in a row, the Cyclones started by earning the doubles point with back-to-back wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots.
Senior Thasaporn Naklo and sophomore Anna Supapitch Kuearum extended their winning streak together to 12 straight with their win over NicoleKhirin and Charlotte Chavatipon, 6-2. Ange Oby Kajuru and Xinyi Nong earned their fourth consecutive victory after defeating TaisiyaPachkaleva and Nicole Rivkin, 6-2.
Texas' No. 113 Marlee Zein would pull the Longhorns level in the team score with a win at No. 6 singles, as Chie Kezuka went down in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.
Sofia Cabezas gave the Cyclones the lead once again after she took down Rivkin, 6-1, 6-4, for her 15th singles victory this season. No. 53 Kajuru put ISU within striking distance with a win over No. 61 Chavatipon, 6-2, 6-3, extending her singles winning streak to 10.
Kadleckova closed it out with her victory over Rapolu in straight sets, sending Iowa State into the semifinals.
