Since committing to Iowa State in the month of June, an Oklahoma prep tight end has been able to focus on leading his high school to an undefeated 2016 season.
Norman North’s Charlie Kolar has been a key player on the offensive side of the ball for the top-ranked team in Class 6A which is 8-0 and primed for a deep run in the playoffs, which begin early next month.
“My senior season is going great,” said Kolar, a three-star recruit who chose the Cyclones a short time after taking an unofficial visit over the summer. “We’re 8-0 right now but still have a lot to improve on before the playoffs start on in a couple weeks. We’re getting better every week as a team.
“I haven’t focused too much individually on my personal gains, but I’ve worked on improving my technique and being smarter. I’ve learned more about the opponent, studied film and worked hard in practice. In the off-season, I think I got bigger and stronger. I’m just maximizing each day and trying to get better.”
The 6-foot-6, 227-pound Kolar has remained in contact with his recruiter, assistant Alex Golesh, as well as I-State head coach Matt Campbell.
“They’re all cool and I like all of them,” Kolar said. “I talk to Coach Golesh all the time and sometimes I talk to Coach Campbell. They’re all great guys. It’s a good relationship and we communicate a lot. Everything is pretty relaxed. They seem more like my coaches than recruiters, because we’re pretty lax and have gotten to know each other better the last couple months.”
At the time of his commitment, Kolar had offers from Air Force, Army and Stephen F. Austin, to go along with Power-5 interest from California, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.
Kolar said he is looking forward to joining ISU as a tight end, although the position itself hasn’t come up too much in his discussions with coaches.
“We don’t talk about (my future role) too much, since we’re focused on what we’re doing and what they’re doing right now,” Kolar said. “Iowa State is trying to use the tight end more with Coach Campbell, so they’re trying to throw it a little bit.”
The Class of 2017 signee said Golesh took in his game against Southmoore on October 7th, the night before the Cyclones took on Oklahoma State in Stillwater.
“I was excited to see him come down to the game and we saw each other during warmups,” Kolar said. “I didn’t really say anything to him before the game (because of NCAA rules), but I knew he was there.”
Kolar will soon repay that visit with a trip of his own to Ames, but says it likely won’t be until after his senior season.
“I haven’t gotten my official visit scheduled yet and am looking forward to that,” he said. “My primary focus is the team I’m playing on right now, so I don’t have a date set yet.”
