I decided to give a local place a try after hearing good things about it. The Taco Depot has two, soon to be three locations in Cedar Rapids. I stopped at the near Town & Country Mall in the old Long John Silvers.
It has a drive thru but I chose to eat in. The waitress immediately recognized me as a Chipotle customer. It a nice place. Kind of fills the gap between fast food & a normal sit down restaurant. The lunch menu was mainly burritos and tacos. I order a carnita buritto. It was big. Too big. Bigger than Chipotle. It was good, but the next time I will probably be more selective on what I order. This had about everything in it. I think it would be better with less in it. I'll probably try the taco next time.
The staff was great. Very friendly. If not for that it could be a one and done for me. But they earned another chance. As it is with a lot of Mexican places, it can take a few tries to find something great. Something that you crave and draws you back. That didn't happen this time but I'm not writing them off yet. There must be a reason they keep opening new locations. Its a nice crowd in here for lunch. I'm not sure if the menu is different later.
