Although he personally hasn’t stepped foot on campus yet, an Illinois prep defensive back already knows quite a bit about Iowa State from his family members that attended the university.
Wilmette Loyola Academy junior Ian Swenson picked up an offer from the Cyclones earlier this month, and was excited to get the news since his dad Todd was a varsity swimmer in Ames for four years in the 80s.
“I was in my coach’s office talking to him and about to go to close, and he handed me the phone and said Iowa State was about to offer me,” said Swenson. “I talked to Coach (Matt) Campbell for a couple minutes and got the offer. He said they like my size, speed and how I play the game in general. The coaches really liked my film. I’m very excited about it because my dad went to Iowa State.”
The 6-foot-1, 180-pound Swenson also has a Power-5 offer from Louisville to go along with several other FBS ones from Bowling Green, Buffalo, Central Michigan, New Mexico, Western Michigan and Wyoming.
Swenson, who said a pair of uncles also attended I-State, said he likes what he’s seen of the program and the new leadership.
“It looks nice and I like the coaches,” he said. “I’ve talked to most of the defensive coaches, multiple times. I’d put Iowa State in my mix of top-three schools right now, just because of the Power-5 conference they play in and the fact I have family that went there.”
ISU coaches have invited Swenson to Ames for an unofficial visit in the coming months.
“I don’t know when I’ll make it out there on a visit, but possibly soon,” Swenson said. “I’m in lacrosse season right now, so it’s kind of difficult to. They’d like me come in during the spring or summer.”
Swenson, who is being recruited to play cornerback, helped his Loyola Academy team to an undefeated 14-0 season and Class 8A state championship last fall.
