While he's still in search of his first Power-5 offer, a talented two-way athlete from a southeast Iowa high school certainly has put himself in prime position with Iowa State after his camp performance over the weekend.
West Burlington's Isaiah Trousil said he enjoyed the interaction with the new coaches in Ames and looks forward to building an even stronger relationship.
"I had a good time out there and felt like I competed with a lot of good players," said Trousil, who said he competed as both a running back and cornerback. "I had a nice time talking to all the coaches again and it was nice to meet all of the new staff. They seemed like a lot of cool guys to have as coaches and are younger, so I can relate to them more. They have a lot of energy and pump you up.
"On the offensive side of the ball, I felt like I did a pretty good job in the one-on-one drills. I felt like I showed them what I can do with my speed. I thought I fared pretty well, but there's always more work to be done."
The 5-foot-11, 180-pound Trousil already has FCS offers from Illinois State and Northern Iowa to go along with interest Power-5 programs around the Midwest.
Trousil's recruitment could pick up even more if he proves during the football season what he did during track, that he's over an injury that plagued him last fall.
"I had a meeting with Coach (Matt) Campbell after the camp and he told me he thought I did a really good job," Trousil said. "He wants to get me back up there for a few more visits. He told me they're really interested in me. It just depends on how my season plays out.
"A lot of coaches want to see if I'm healthy, because last season I had a couple ankle sprains. If I have a good season, there's a good chance I could be on scholarship. Coach Campbell also said there's a chance of me being a preferred walk-on."
Trousil certainly turned heads over the spring track season, running a career-best 10.64 seconds in the 100-meter and 21.33 in the 200-meter dashes. His time in the 200m ranks second all-time in the state of Iowa, while the 100m time is fourth.
"It was a fun season to have," he said. "I'm really close to a couple all-time Iowa records and I'm sure some football coaches would like to see me get that. That's the ultimate goal for me next track season, getting those all-time records. I think just approaching those records has helped get me out there as a football recruit."
