Iowa State’s lone commitment for the Class of 2019 is a quarterback from a high school in Michigan, and the coaching staff would like nothing more than to secure the prospect’s former wide receiver teammate as well.
Belleville sophomore Julian Barnett has multiple Power-5 offers despite the fact he won’t sign a national letter-of-intent for nearly two more years. Iowa State is one of those schools that have offered, and did so on February 23rd of last year.
“I’m not a junior yet, so I can’t have a lot of communication with the coaches,” said Barnett, who took a game-day visit to Iowa State last fall. “The only time I talk to the coaches is when I call them. I really like the program, because their facilities are really top-notch. I like how everything is set up and everything you need is in one space. You’re all together. It feels like it’s a legit place to go. I would like to be there.”
The 6-foot-2, 180-pound Barnett, who is a former teammate of the Cyclones’ 2019 quarterback commitment Dwan Mathis, also has P5 offers from the likes of Auburn, Georgia, Kentucky, Michigan State and Missouri.
Barnett said he’s heard the Cyclone coaching staff likes a number of aspects of his play.
“They love my work ethic and how tough I am,” Barnett said. “I play on both sides of the ball. They think I can do great thinks for the program.”
If he were to ink with I-State in the Class of 2019, Barnett said he could envision himself playing any of the wide receiver positions.
“With how I think and how my work ethic is, I think I could be a versatile receiver and fit in both outside and inside,” he said. “I just want to play. If I go outside and they throw the ball, I’m going to go get it. If I play inside, I’m going to go get it.”
Barnett has been recruited by ISU’s area recruiter D.K. McDonald.
