A top Iowa State quarterback target for the Class of 2018 recently visited for a Junior Day and came away impressed with his athletic and academic experiences.

Pattonville Maryland Heights sophomore Kaleb Eleby traveled to Ames on February 27th.

“I really liked the atmosphere from the minute I stepped on campus,” said Eleby, whose lone scholarship offer is from Iowa State. “It was a nice feeling. The coaches were very positive and it was a family-type atmosphere. The facilities were amazing. I loved the experience and how the coaches talked about the education side of things. They really care about the academics, as well.

“There are so many things you hear about a college, but you don’t entirely know until you step foot on campus for the first time. I was hearing a lot of good things about Iowa State and I can’t say enough about how good the atmosphere was and how it was family-oriented. Without knowing anybody on the team, I felt like I was already a part of the team. Everything ran smoothly and great. I definitely enjoyed Iowa State.”

The 6-foot-1, 180-pound Eleby spent some time meeting with Cyclone assistant coach Jim Hofher, who offered some advice.

“I met with Coach Hofher and we went over my film and talked about things that I do well and things to improve on,” Eleby said. “He basically just told me to keep doing what I’m doing and make sure I’m doing what I’m supposed to do on and off the field. All of that will make a better person at the end of the day.”

Eleby said he feels like he’ll be a good fit for the offense that I-State will implement for the upcoming season.

“I’m able to do a lot of things well and feel like I’ll be able to do what they want to do,” he said. “Whatever they need me to do, I feel like I can do well. I’m really good at throwing the ball and we run an up-tempo spread offense. It won’t be much of a change. Whatever I’m asked to do, I’m willing to do. I just feel very blessed and proud because they were the first program to take a chance on me.”

The starting quarterback for Maryland Heights since his freshman year, Eleby threw for more than 2,000 yards and 22 touchdowns last fall as a sophomore.

Eleby visited Iowa for a Junior Day on Saturday and will be on Illinois’ campus for an unofficial visit this weekend.

The quarterback said he’ll likely be back on I-State’s campus during the summer and looks forward to meeting with Hofher again.

“They’re going to come down to see me during the spring and would like me to come back up there for a camp,” Eleby said. “I told them I’d like to, especially to talk to Coach Hofher. He gave me some things to improve on, so when I come back to the camp I want to be able to show him I improved on the things we talked about.”
