I got a phone call today and the caller ID said "restricted." I normally don't answer calls from numbers I don't know, but this one had me curious because of that "restricted" ID, so I answered it. It was a guy, no accent, who asked me whom he was speaking to. I said, "you called me, who am I speaking to?" (Shouldn't you know who you're speaking to if you make the phone call? And how rude is that? That's the first thing out of your mouth? You don't introduce yourself first? That's how polite people do it. That's always been one of my pet peeves.)
He then tries to tell me I stole his identity, that the number he dialed (my number) was actually his number. He didn't bother to tell me how he could dial his number and get me, because that's not how phones work, last i checked. This is how the conversation went after that:
"Yeah? You're full of shit."
"Oh, really? Well, I'm going to be filing blah, blah, blah with blah, blah, blah."
"This is a scam. You're trying to scam me." ... click. I hung up.
After that, I called the cops on the nonemergency number, mostly because I wanted to see if something like this had been making the rounds. He told me to call the FBI office and report it to them and gave me their number. I called and they directed me to a website to file an incident report, which I did. Both places agreed that it sounded like a scam to them. He was probably going to ask me for money so he wouldn't file a claim on me or try to get my Social Security number or something like that, but I didn't give him the chance.
Anyone else ever get a call like that?
