According to CBS Sports Network’s Inside College Basketball . What was noteworthy of 1944? WWII, of course, but that’s when the Cyclones were in the final four. (I don’t think it was known as the “final four” back then as we know it today, and there were questions if they could field a team at that point in the season due to players going to war, but whatever, they won a regional and got there!)

By the way, I enjoy the new CBS Sports Network’s Inside College Basketball on after the games. It’s replayed numerous times overnight. Giving ESPN some competition, and using that NCAA tourney musical anthem in their intros and breaks gets you pumped-up!
