While a nice problem to have, not sure if the substantial increase in rights fees may not lead to some unintended consequences. What exactly will they spend it on and will they be able to keep all of it?
To point out the enormity of this windfall, the UofI expected >$100 million in rights fees EXCEEDS the state appropriation to UNI for next year. That most recent regents tuition hike was set to raise $35 million. Not sure how state appropriators can say no to taking a portion of the money they usually give to UofI (and tell the UofI AD to give a portion of the rights fees to the school) and either give Iowa students a break on tuition or reallocate the $ to ISU and UNI. I’m guessing the academic side of UofI would also have heartburn over using all this $ on coaching salaries and lawsuit settlements. Ultimately, my guess is that the UofI AD won’t have full access to all this $.
At some point, the law of diminishing returns kicks in - not sure where that point is reached. And I don’t think for a minute that the NCAA will change the rules to allow these schools to pay players with this $ - would never get the votes to make this change.
