I told the board a few months ago that my grandfather was not doing well. He had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's, in the early stages, and about a month ago he went to the doctor with pain in his shoulder from golfing and learned that he had lymphoma. He denied treatment, which nobody in the family thought was a bad idea at his age.
From that point on, Papa just continued to get worse. His appetite left and he was withering away and growing weaker. Yesterday morning, he passed away in Grandma's arms.
Graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1948. Graduated from Iowa State University as a Civil Engineer in 1952 as a member of the Army ROTC and deployed to Korea. Father of 5 and biological grandfather of 21.
Arlen W. Duesenberg was a good man and the reason I am an Iowa State Cyclone today and forever. I have many memories of Grandpa, but the fondest were the times he would take me to Jack Trice Stadium a full hour before kickoff. We would watch the players warm up and scan through the entire roster to identify each of the players. We usually left early, though, and unhappy. LOL I watched Troy Davis finish off a couple late game TDs from the hillsides on the way out of games. We would always turn on the post-game and listen to it the whole drive home.
Some of you may know him, most probably won't. He was a member of this board for years until it was no longer beneficial for his health.
Thank you for the kind words a few months ago. I'll be off the board for the next few days as I travel and spend time with family.
