Iowa State junior wide receiver Trever Ryen has been named to the preseason watch list for the 2016 Paul Hornung Award, announced today by the Louisville Sports Commission.
The Hornung Award presented by Texas Roadhouse is given annually to the nation’s most versatile major college football player and is named in honor of Paul Hornung, a member of both the college and pro football halls of fame.
A native of Ida Grove, Iowa, Ryen made a splash on the Iowa State football team in 2015. A former walk-on who was placed on scholarship in September, Ryen was one of ISU’s most diverse players as a rushing, receiving and return threat.
Ryen finished the season with 16 carries for 71 yards and 18 receptions for 191 yards.
He also handled duties as a punt returner, averaging 15.5 yards per return, and kickoff returner, compiling a 17.9 per return average.
In ISU’s season-opening win vs. UNI last year, Ryen ran back a punt return 81 yards for a TD, the 10th-longest punt return in school history.
Ryen was one of only eight players in FBS in 2015 to score a TD by rush, reception and punt return.
Ryen is also a member of the Cyclone track & field team, competing in the 4X100-meter relay and 200-meter dash.
