It was actually Arizona State who played in 1987 and 1997. They beat Michigan in '87 (22-15). ASU's coach was none other than our own John Cooper.
ASU lost to Ohio State in 1997 (20-17). Bruce Snyder was the coach that year.
And the funnest Rose Bowl fact of all that I discovered: Over the past 70 years, only one team has been shut out in the Rose Bowl. May I introduce you to your "not-quite-ready-for prime-time" 1982 Iowa Hawkeyes, who got skunked 28-0 by Washington.
