It will be an early alarm Thursday morning for Elkhart (Ind.) Concord junior safety Cedric Mitchell.
The 2017 prospect that recently received an Iowa State scholarship offer is hitting the road early for an unofficial visit to Ames tomorrow. Mitchell will be joined on the seven-hour trip by high school teammate Grant Magnuson, a sophomore offensive lineman, and Magnuson’s father Kyle – an assistant coach for the Concord football program.
Mitchell is a 6-foot-2, 180-pounder that has offers from Ball State, Bowling Green, Miami (Ohio), Temple, Toledo and Western Michigan in addition to his first Power 5 offer that came recently from ISU.
I-State is the second of three visits scheduled for Mitchell over a four-day span. He was on Notre Dame’s campus Wednesday, only about a half-hour from his home. On Saturday, he plans to be back in his home state for an unofficial visit to Indiana.
Mitchell, who said he has talked most with Cyclone assistant coaches John Heacock and Eli Rasheed, said his relationship with Iowa State goes back almost to day one of the Matt Campbell era.
“It was in the first week after they got there that they actually started recruiting me,” Campbell said. “I can hopefully get to know them a lot better on the visit. I like to look at the campus life and how homey a place feels since I would be there for four or five years. And of course education is important, getting a chance for me to improve myself in that way.”
Mitchell said he plans to major in sports marketing or some other business program in college.
Mitchell recorded nearly 50 tackles in his junior season at Concord. He also picked off four passes and had one forced fumble. He returned two kickoffs for touchdowns and on offense, caught 26 passes for over 600 yards. Mitchell was an all-conference, all-area and all-state player last fall.
