TULSA, Okla. – Paniro Johnson advanced to the Big 12 finals, while Aiden Riggins and MJ Gaitan qualified for the 2025 NCAA Championships, Saturday evening inside the BOK Center. Johnson defeated Oklahoma State’s Teague Travis in a 149-pound semifinal to punch his ticket to the national tournament.
Johnson registered two takedowns against the Cowboy, one in each of the first two periods, en route to a decisive 7-3 decision. It marks Johnson’s, a 2023 Big 12 champion, second finals appearance in as many tries. Johnson will get a rematch against UNI’s top-seeded Colin Realbuto in Sunday night’s finals.
Riggins and Gaitan both went 2-0 in Session II to secure their spot in the big dance.
Iowa State sits in fourth place in the team race with 84.0 points, trailing Oklahoma State (137.5), UNI (120.5) and South Dakota State (87.5). In total, 9-of-10 Cyclone wrestlers are still alive in the tournament.
Four other Cyclones were unsuccessful in their semifinal bids Saturday night.
At 141 pounds, Jacob Frost dropped a 14-3 major decision to UNI’s Cael Happel while top-seeded Cody Chittum fell, 12-4, to SDSU’s No. 4 Cobe Siebrecht. No. 4 Evan Bockman injury defaulted to top seeded Parker Keckeisen in the second period of a 184-pound semifinal.
No. 6 Daniel Herrera battled No. 2 seed Cohlton Schultz of Arizona State but ultimately dropped a 4-1 decision to the Sun Devil.
