TULSA, Okla. – Five Cyclones earned a spot in the Big 12 semifinals Saturday afternoon inside the BOK Center. Jacob Frost (141), Paniro Johnson (149), Cody Chittum (157), Evan Bockman (184) and Daniel Herrera (285) will all wrestle tonight for a spot in the finals.
Frost, Chittum and Bockman all punched their tickets to the 2025 NCAA Championships during the first session.
Iowa State is second in the team race with 54.0 points. The Cyclones trail first-place Oklahoma State which ended the first session with 83 points. UNI is close behind ISU in third with 50 points.
All 10 Cyclones are still in the action with Kysen Terukina (125), Evan Frost (133), Aiden Riggins (165), MJ Gaitan (174) and Nate Schon (197) alive on the consolation side of their respective brackets.
At 141 pounds, No. 3 Jacob Frost came from behind to defeat Missouri’s No. 6 Josh Edmond in the quarterfinals. Frost gave up two early takedowns but a third period flurry, which included two takedowns, two stall points and a four-point turn, gave the Cyclone a 15-8 decision.
No. 2 Paniro Johnson had a pair of tight matches to open the tournament. He earned a 2-1 decision over South Dakota State’s Avery Allen in the First Round before winning his quarterfinal match on a stall point in sudden victory against Missouri’s No. 7 Logan Gioffre, 6-5.
Top-seeded Cody Chittum commanded his first two matches of the day with a pair of major decisions in the First Round and Quarterfinals. He will see SDSU’s Cobe Siebrecht in tonight’s semifinals in a rematch of a thrilling bout in the ISU-SDSU dual last month.
In a quarterfinal at 184 pounds, No. 4 Evan Bockman took down Oklahoma’s No. 5 Deanthony Parker Jr. with eight seconds remaining in sudden victory to clinch a 4-1 decision.
No. 6 Daniel Herrera had perhaps the best first session with two falls in two matches. He pinned North Dakota State’s Andrew Blackburn-Forst in the First Round and UNI’s No. 3 Lance Runyon in the quarterfinals.
