I thought it would be interesting to compare this class to prior classes. I figured I'd start in '07 which was Chizik's first recruiting class and work through our current class to date. Just for fun....
Classes with at least one commitment prior to 17 April in the respective season?
In the last 10, and the 11th one building right now, we have had exactly 4 classes with at least one commitment prior to 17 April....according to dates in Rivals database.
2017-Campbell, 8 prior to 17 April
2012-Rhoads, 2 prior to 17 April
2014-Rhoads, 1 prior to 17 April(Lazard)
2015-Rhoads, 1 prior to 17 April
The first 8 commitments of each class by stars?
2017-Campbell, 24 stars (8 x ***)
2012-Rhoads, 22 stars (6 x ***, 2 x **)
2010-Rhoads, 22 stars (1 x ****, 4 x ***, 3 x **)
2015-Rhoads, 21 stars (5 x ***, 3 x **)
2014-Rhoads, 21 stars (1 x ****, 3 x ***, 4 x **)
2013-Rhoads, 21 stars (5 x ***, 3 x **)
2009-Rhoads, 21 stars (5 x ***, 3 x **) mostly prior staff
2011-Rhoads, 20 stars (4 x ***, 4 x **)
2007-Chizik, 20 stars (4 x ***, 4 x **) mostly prior staff
2016-Campbell, 19 stars (3 x ***, 5 x **) mostly prior staff
2008-Chizik, 19 stars (3 x ***, 5 x **)
Notable is that Chizik's BEST of two early classes was mostly comprised of guys committed to DMac.
However, Rhoads's 2nd WORST class was mostly early commits to Chizik at this point. This is notable, because Campbell's first (and worst) class was mostly Rhoads commits as well to this point.
In no prior season of these prior 10, did we have more than 6 stars worth of recruit ranking in a class.
Let that settle for a minute. If this staff holds this class together, to date when compared to other classes, we have 24 stars to the next most competitive being 6 stars (2 recruits), 4 stars(Lazard), and 3 stars(1 recruit).
The hopeful side in me says that having a class that is currently ranked in the Top 30 of recruit rankings will help the coaching staff sell that something special is happening at Iowa State...which in turn may help them land a couple bigger fish.
I know this is way too early, but count me super excited at the energy of this staff.
