1/3 of the football season is done. That is sad because it is going fast; it is so disappointing to have our dream season crushed already; and, we are facing uncertainty once again.
Most of what we see is probably not unexpected or at least foreseeable. That doesn't make it any easier to stomach. My random thoughts:
Most of what we see is probably not unexpected or at least foreseeable. That doesn't make it any easier to stomach. My random thoughts:
- Our offensive line is not improving. It consistently struggles versus pressure defenses. I don't care about the yards. It consistently fails at critical moments. 3 of 4 games it has created issues.
- Punting is a disaster. And we still have coverage breakdowns.
- Wide Receivers are not even average, save Hutchison. No speed, no separation, no playmakers.
- Purdy remains plateaued. He is why we win more than ever before. He is why we cannot take the next step. If the Oline is not going to improve, we need a great, not very good QB.
- Once again, key performers were dinged up (Kolar, Hutchison) when the season began. Kolar still looks a step slow, but Hall had more urgency and looked like his old self against the 2nd best defense we have faced.
- Once again our ballyhooed backups are not either trusted or productive. Hard to know which, since they are seldom used on offense.
- I don't know if play calling impacts the consistency of performance on offense or inconsistency of performance impact ts play calling. A statistically good offense is suddenly inconsistent.
- Defense is very good. 10 of the points were directly on Special teams and their 2nd TD was set up by the blocked punt.
- The punting team is a total disaster. Coverage teams are either great or a screwup. Return teams really haven't had many opportunities and they have fixed the punt returner, for the most part.
- Once again, October is going to be critical.
