Looking to take a third wide receiver in the Class of 2018, Iowa State hosted one of the top remaining prospects on their board last weekend when a Florida recruit made his way to Ames.
South Fort Myers senior Jeshaun Jones said he liked attending a game at Jack Trice Stadium and many other aspects of his official visit.
“I enjoyed the game, even though it had just started raining when I got there,” said Jones. “The crowd was still pretty well even with the weather, so I enjoyed seeing that. What I really liked is how a lot of different receivers get a chance to get the ball. That is really intriguing to me. I got to talk with Coach Gasser and Coach Campbell. I got to see the campus and the academics.”
The 6-foot-1, 170-pound Jones, a three-star wide receiver with a 5.7 Rivals rating, was taking his second official visit of the process, after traveling to Tennessee last month. He’s also planning a stop at Maryland next month. In addition to those three schools, Jones has Power-5 offers from Arkansas, Florida State, Indiana, Kentucky, Minnesota, North Carolina, NC State, Rutgers. Virginia Tech and Wisconsin.
The fact he made it to campus for an official visit gives I-State a better shot, Jones said.
“It’s going to help them, because I actually got to get up there and see it and get around the people,” he said. “I got the whole vibe.”
Selling Jones on his anticipated role in the Cyclones’ offense was one of the staff’s goals, and position coach Bryan Gasser did just that during a meeting.
“He compared my film to the things they do,” Jones said. “He showed me ways that I would fit in. There were examples of my film and examples of their film. Allen Lazard and Hakeem Butler came up a lot in the clips, as did a lot of their receivers. My film compares to a lot of the things they do.”
Freshman wide receiver Tarique Milton, also a native of Florida, hosted Jones over the weekend.
“He said they’re really caring coaches and if I was to come there, I’d have to be ready to compete,” Jones said. “He said the coaches want the best out of you.”
The official visit wrapped up on Sunday with Jones meeting up with Campbell.
“He shared that they’re really interested and would love to have me,” Jones said. “He said they have two wide receivers committed and are taking three. He said he’d love for me to be that third commit. I let him know that I want to take my visits and weigh it all out to make sure I’m making the best decision for me. He was totally OK with that, understood and actually encouraged me to do that.”
According to Jones, ISU coaches will be in Fort Myers to see him shortly after the end of the regular season.
