I am speaking here, of course, of the definition of the word many of us learned in grade school as a part of speech, to wit:
"We suck!"
"Our coach is a loser!"
"We won't even be a bubble team!"
"Hoiberg screwed the program!"
I think most of us believed we were overrated when we were in the top five, and I don't think any of us thought we actually were a favorite to win the conference.....and that was when West Virginia wasn't considered a factor and we thought Naz would be Naz.
Not trying to be a Pollyanna here. As regular board visitors know, I'm as pessimistic as the next guy (depending upon who the next guy is). And I think the loss at Texas was a huge deal. I am as concerned as anybody else about depth, defense and the lack of team play on too many occasions. I think we're seeing signs of senioritis instead of senior maturity. Living where I do, the success of the Iowa team makes our struggles even worse.
But bottom line -- as someone once said -- we've lost 4 games by a total of 14 points to teams that aren't chopped liver. We have two good wins. What's happening is that instead of pulling wins out of our collective hawkeye the way we did last year, we're only winning our share of the ones that go down to the wire. We're 2-4 in that respect this year compared to 10-5 last season. If Niang doesn't slip against UNI, and Morris makes that open shot at the end of the Oklahoma game, we're probably a top ten team right now and aren't a bit better than we are now.
The C.R. Gazette had a story this morning with some pretty insightful comments by Georges and Monte. It also had a comment by Prohm about discontinuing social media that is downright embarrassing to the fan base, or should be.
I'm going to try to view the rest of the year as hoping we're going to win instead of thinking we should and fearing we'll lose. Yes, even this afternoon. It's not like there's a real alternative, anyway.
