Iowa State is pushing hard for an official visit from a suburban Pittsburgh (Pa.) defensive end that will sign in the Class of 2017.

McKees Rocks Montour junior Mason Cholewa is considering a summertime official visit to Iowa State, after receiving an offer from the Cyclones on April 30th and seeing lead recruiter Tyson Veidt on campus for spring evaluations.

“He came to one of my practices and just watched me a little bit,” said Cholewa. “I’ve talked to Coach Veidt on Twitter a little bit since then. He thought I did a really great job in practice and that I’m a great athlete. They’re really trying to get me on campus for a visit. I haven’t decided where my visits are going to be, but it’s an option.”

I-State is recruiting the 6-foot-6, 260-pound Cholewa to play defensive end. The junior already has offers from the likes of Buffalo, UConn, Syracuse, Temple, Toledo and UCF.

Cholewa found out about his offer from the Cyclones from his head coach, and said he followed up with Veidt soon thereafter.

“My head coach called me into his office and told me that I had an offer from Iowa State,” Cholewa said. “Then I direct-messaged Coach Veidt and thanked him for the offer. He was pretty fired up to offer me and said I am a great athlete that could really help the program.”

Although he doesn’t know much about the program yet, Cholewa said he likes what he’s seen so far and that it has potential under a new coaching staff.

“I like Iowa State,” he said. “I’ve done a little research on the program and they’re getting better. I think there’s some greatness on the team. Coach Veidt is a really good guy and I like him as a person.”

Likely to close the books on his recruiting by the start of his senior season, Cholewa said he’ll take some trips over the summer prior to making his choice.

“I’m probably going to make my decision in August or a little after that,” he said. “I’m planning on taking some unofficial visits in the summer before that, but haven’t really decided where those are going to be.”
