Doc was an extremely unpopular hire a couple springs ago when Southern Miss (finally) settled on him. Back then, Brad Underwood (Stephen F. Austin, now at Oklahoma State) had all but signed on the dotted line at Southern Miss, and then all of a sudden...."not interested".

Some believe that Underwood and other candidates had an inkling of what might be coming in the future in terms of NCAA investigation of the basketball program. I'm not so sure of that, but it doesn't matter now. Former coach Donnie Tyndall left a fine mess. Of course, Tennessee promptly fired Tyndall when word of the investigation and some details were made public. Tyndall was hit with a 10 year ban from being employed as a coach by an NCAA member institution.

Meanwhile, Doc is faced with what the school had already self-imposed, plus the hit from the NCAA which was released today. Doc's a good guy in a horrible situation.

Former Southern Mississippi men’s basketball coach acted unethically
