I had read that a couple weeks ago a portion of the bridge had fallen into the Des Moines river after being damaged by an ice jam back in February. On my trip to Ames yesterday I took a little detour and went to take a look at it. Some friends of ours live near there and we had driven across that bridge many times until it was permanently closed back in 2008. I don't have any sentimental connections to the bridge as I'm not from that area but it does look a little sick now with the one set of trusses laying in the river. For those of you not familiar with the area and the bridge, it is just a few hundred yards north of the UP's Kate Shelley High Bridge(s). Plural because the old(built in 1901) RR bridge is still standing next to the new massive bridge built in 2009. Quite the scenic area (imo) around there. I'm assuming that Pauly85 has some stories about the area around those bridges......looks like a heck of a place for young people to party ..........
