We have two choices. Assuming a vaccination is at minimum a year away, we need to end shelter in place soon. Choices?
Keep it in place, tank the economy and still have the same problem. When the shelter in place ends, people will get sick.
Or, end shelter in place for the 80+ percent who are low risk and get jobs back. Immunity will build quickly among that group. At risk stay home. And everyone use social distancing.
We are also putting a lot of resources into nursing homes. My father was in one. The average length of stay is less than two years, so many are near death. We may have to make some tough decisions.
And I heard this week we have put respirators and ventilators into hospice units. That makes no sense. People go there at the end of life.
No matter what, people will die. Most will live. If we destroy our way of life in the process, it’s a terrible mistake.
