I really don't have a clue why they picked this guy as he really didn't have that stellar of a career in business and of course had no career in academia. It seems to me that the BOR is just saying to the U of I that they are tired of taking crap from them and they are going to put their own guy in as Prez just to start running things the way the BOR wants them run. The next time the U of I wants to ignore the BOR and do an end run around them to the state legislature, maybe they will think twice.
The fact that this new guy was a unanimous choice of the BOR is very telling. It will be a battle royal I think.... This new guy will be opposed at every turn by both faculty and students.
