Had the pleasure of attending the Jags versus Texans game yesterday. Front Row of the end zone seats were nice. So close to the action it was very enjoyable.
Some musings, yes some of them obvious....
There is so much speed in the league. You kind of get lulled in to not appreciating it because it kills the other team on one hand and covers a multitude of sins on the other. But it is ever present.
Bone head QB play kills you. The Jags had many opportunities to put themselves in a good position. Their QB (Bortles) while possessing good enough physical skills, made some incredibly boneheaded passes. And they cost the Jags big (eg. scoring opportunity right before half). Hoyer on the other hand, didn't look as physically impressive as Bortles but man did he have a good game. The guy can throw a good ball. The Texans had a good plan and they executed.
Receivers who can't catch kill you. Receivers who value the skin are a huge difference maker. The window thru which the ball arrives, even in a one on one situation, can be incredibly small.
Foster, the RB for the Texans had a pretty good game. He may not be the fastest guy in the league but he has speed. Incredible balance. You have to tackle him. He read blocks and hit holes you hardly thought were there.
Line play wins games. When you block and when you break thru the LOS you dictate the game. A QB without time is not very effective.
DBs can look skinny, but there is so much size on the field, that may be a bit of an illusion. Regardless, speed kills (again).
I think you could call PI on almost any given play. There is a lot of contact between DBs & receivers on most every play.
Place kickers can suck the wind out of you. The Jags got down 31-14. Scored to make it 31-20. Plenty of time even though an uphill climb. The kicker comes in an yanks the XP. Just screwed with the momentum.
Execution is critical. Even after the missed XP. The Jags went for the onside kick and got it! But WAIT, offside on the kicking team. Next try squirts OB. Texans get the ball in great field position.
These guys can hit. Saw a horrible injury. Knee. Saw the guy flying through the air and his leg kind of flopping almost sideways. Had to put the air cast on it and use the cart.
In the end, football is a relatively simple game. Stating the obvious, better talent coupled with better coaching produces winning.
Even though the college game is not the NFL, the same basic principals apply. Bigger, faster, stronger and better coached is going to win the day. Anything sound familiar?
