In the last few years, I've noticed a deteriatoration in my shotgun shooting accuracy. It doesn't affect other guns I shoot because I use only one eye to aim those (black powder with a scope and pistol with laser sight). Most shooters use both eyes to acquire the target when shooting a shotgun.
Come to find out I've always been "left eye dominant" and right handed (cross dominance). I didn't even know this was a thing until a couple of months ago. It's something like 30% of the population is like this. There's much out there on the inter-web about this. Most recommend retraining your right eye to be the dominate eye (wearing a patch, Vaseline on your left shooting glasses lense, etc). The other option is learn to shoot left-handed.
I didn't like either of those two options so I've been working to learn to shoot with one eye (simply closing your left eye). Seems simple, right? That hasn't worked, in fact, accuracy has declined more. The gun muzzle becomes a dominate image and you begin to aim and loose accuracy.
At my wife's insistance, I went to the eye doctor. He first confirmed my left eye dominance. He also confirmed the natural deterioration in my eye strength and vision one would expect for a mid-50s guy. I've only used readers before, but now have bifocals on order. He assures me this will fix my situation. And he's a hunter, too, so I tend to believe him.
Has anyone else experienced this situation and successfully dealt with it, one way or the other?
