I don't want to go overboard about it, but yesterday I had to ask this question. Why was George Raveling voted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame?
He recruited well. Was popular among other coaches. But he never took a team beyond the 2nd Round of the NCAA Tournament.
He made just two NCAA Tournaments at each Washington State, Iowa and USC.
You could say easily that the biggest thing on the court that Raveling was a part of was being an assistant on the 1984 Olympic Gold Medal winning team.
Raveling got in on contributions to the game. Which was impacted in his American-America leadership. That went a long way toward election, and trumped his coaching record, where he was under .500 in conference at two of his three stops. And one where he had a winning league record was not at Iowa. It was at Washington State.
The little known fact about Raveling was he was on the podium at Dr. Martin Luther King's "I have a Dream" speech and the "March on Washington" in 1963. King gave Raveling the speech, which he still has. Great stuff.
