I was driving through your fair city late yesterday afternoon, flipping around several radio stations to see what your programming was like these days.

I was on KMRY around the 5:00 hour, and was surprised to hear Bob Brooks still doing a regular sportscast on air. Man, that was so painful to listen to. He could no longer enunciate names and words, and at times all you heard was mush.

I was never a fan of his anyway, and it would be easy to pull out a few old-age comments about him. But I actually felt sorry for this icon who just can't "let it go". He had a sparkling career covering his beloved Hawkeyes, but despite my dislike for everything Hawkeye, it was sad to hear him trying to hang on way too long and kind of making a fool of himself. Rick Sellers needs to pull him aside and tell him to go fishing.

Makes me appreciate the way Ron Gonder left the business with class...even though he still sounds good enough to do play-by-play these days if he wanted to.

I plan to work as long as I possibly can, too. But my family has firm instructions from me to have me step aside as soon as they can tell I can't do a respectable job anymore.

Speaking of CR radio, my son John is the on-air guy from 7 p.m. to midnight on Z 102.9 FM. I drove back to Ames from Davenport between 8:30 and 11:30 last night on Highway 30, and could pull in Z's signal the entire way. I was surprised to pick it up all the way out near the Mississippi.
