I know this name has been mentioned by others on the board, but wanted to share a thought I posted elsewhere, about Buffalo Head Coach Lance Leipold, who won a bunch of games at U of Wisconsin-Whitewater, a DIII school and is in his first year at Buffalo.
I've researched Jack Trice's story for many years now and one name that keeps popping up in the 1910s/1920s sports pages is Gil Dobie, the former Washington, Navy, and Cornell coach who won 100 games faster than any other coach in football history. In doing so, Dobie's record at UW was only 58 - 0 - 3 (slacker) and Dobie followed that up with a couple of mythical national titles at Cornell. He was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame as a charter member in 1951.
His record set in 1921 stood for 93 years until Lance Leipold broke it in 2014 during his final year at UW-W. That's right, Leipold broke the record of a coach who went UNDEFEATED for almost a solid decade for crying out loud.
Yes, UW-W was in the DIII title game in 2005 and 2006, losing both times, before Leipold arrived in 2007. However, they had never won a title in program history. Leipold fixed that in his first year in 2007, then he won another one, then again, and again, and again, and again.
Yes, UW-W is only DIII, which is a coaching backwater and he only has one year at Buffalo under his belt. There isn't enough FBS/FCS experience, right? Actually, Leipold coached at Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Nebraska-Omaha for a combined 15 years before taking the head job at UW-W. Leipold also was a QB in college, which can't hurt matters any!
Would Leipold win at ISU? Who knows. But ISU has done a lot worse many times in the past.
