After a pair of unofficial visits to Iowa State this month, a St. Louis (Mo.) offensive lineman said he’s feeling even better about his lone Power-5 offer.
DeSmet three-star junior Marquise Simmons said he’s gotten a good feel for the Cyclones’ football program and academic offerings over the course of two trips in 2018.
“I was on campus two or three weeks ago when Iowa State was in spring practice,” said Simmons, who also has an offer from Texas State to go along with interest from programs in the Big 10 and SEC conferences.
“I liked it a lot and it’s a place I can see myself being at. I watched a practice, talked to the coaches and enjoyed watching how the players play. I liked the tempo they practice with and liked how the offensive line worked together and were fundamentally sound in how they blocked their assignments. I also went up for a Junior Day and was able to see more of the campus and the academics.”
His March visit marked the first time he saw new offensive line coach Jeff Myers in action with his position group.
“I think Coach Myers is really great and gets his point across well with his players,” Simmons said. “I didn’t get to talk to him a whole lot, because after practice I had to leave, but I did talk to Coach (Matt) Campbell for a while. He said he was excited to have a chance to recruit me. He would like me to come up over the summer, so he can spend more time with me.”
With a pair of ISU trips in the rearview mirror, Simmons said he’s even higher on the school.
“It’s improved a lot,” he said. They’re still sitting in the same spot and are my number one school as of now. I really like going up there and knowing how the coaches are. The academics don’t seem like they’re that bad. Iowa State is close to home and has an offense that I can fit into well.”
Simmons said he would like to make a decision in July or August.
