A three-star offensive tackle returned home to his home state of Florida on Sunday afternoon following a weekend official visit to Iowa State.

The experience was certainly enough to make St. Augustine Menendez standout senior Connor Robbins consider becoming a Cyclone in the Class of 2017.

“It was awesome and everything you’d expect out of a school,” said Robbins. “They have everything you need. The coaches are cool and hanging out with the players was cool as well. It’s a big school and they have a lot of fans. Everything is so close-knit up there. Most of the players hang out with each other, which is good.”

The 6-foot-8, 295-pound Robbins said he was impressed by the facilities at ISU, plus by the discussions he had with the coaching staff the past few days.

“We went through the football complex, academic buildings and talked to all the tutors,” Robbins said. “They showed me what my classes would be and how it would work. We ate a lot of food and at night we went to the basketball arena and ate dinner there. Then we hung out with our hosts.

“During the day, Coach (Tom) Manning and I went into the offensive line meeting room and talked about what he likes in the offensive line and the things that are bull crap that he doesn’t like. He keeps it real with his players. You’ve just got to be yourself with him.”

Robbins, who will be targeted to play tackle in Ames, also has Power-5 offers from the likes of Maryland, Missouri, Pittsburgh and Syracuse. But it appears to be a two-horse race at this point between the Cyclones and one another program.

“I’m close to committing (to ISU) and it’s kind of a no-brainer, but I’m going to keep it going a little bit,” Robbins said. “USF was still in my recruiting top two, so I’m still considering them. I want to meet the new coach, talk to him and give him a chance to recruit me.”

That new head coach is reported to be former Texas head coach Charlie Strong. Robbins said he had an official visit planned to USF the weekend of January 13-15 and intends to keep to that schedule until he hears otherwise from the new staff.

Robbins said he expects to have an in-home with the Cyclone staff around the time of his USF official.

“Coach Campbell said he would come by my house in January when the recruiting period starts back up again,” Robbins said. “He said he’d come by with Coach (Jim) Hofher and Coach Manning.”
