Iowa State is likely to sign at least one running back in the 2020 class and a standout from the state of Oklahoma may be settling into the top spot on the coaching staff’s wish list.

Oklahoma City Bishop McGuinness junior Dominic Richardson put up big numbers last fall and picked up an Iowa State offer, before traveling to Ames for a Prospect Day visit over the winter. He said Matt Campbell’s staff is also in touch frequently.

“Iowa State is a great program and the coaches come down to see me a lot,” said Richardson. “I really appreciate that. They do a lot for me. I plan on going back up on another unofficial visit in the middle of April, so I’m excited about that. I’m pretty sure I’ll also be doing an official visit there, too, as they’re at the top of the list.”

Spearheading the staff’s recruiting efforts of Richardson has been area recruiter Alex Golesh.

“He’s a great guy and great coach,” Richardson said. “He said I’m high on their list. He’s committed to me and I’m committed to him. We have a great connection and talk a lot through text and all that. He’s a great to be getting to know.”

The 6-foot-1, 197-pound Richardson rushed for 2,135 yards and 26 touchdowns last season as a junior. A three-star prospect with a 5.7 Rivals rating, he is considered the fourth overall prospect in Oklahoma and the 26th running back nationally in the 2020 class.

In addition to the one he received from I-State, Richardson has also picked up Power-5 offers from Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas State, Missouri and Nebraska.

“I’m a strong and physical back,” he said. “They like how I don’t go down after first contact, keep moving my feet, being powerful and having that vision on the field. When I see that hole, I burst through it, go and don’t get caught.”

Given the three-year track record of David Montgomery in Ames, Richardson said he’s had reason to take notice of how the ISU program showcases its running backs.

“They’ve got some good ones there right now and have had some good ones in the past,” he said. “I’ve been following a couple of them. David Montgomery has it all – the vision, the skill, the speed and the power. I can visualize him and take notes.

“I love how all the running backs’ game styles reminds me of me. I’m a powerful running back and they have some powerful guys as well. I like Iowa State’s game plans and how they line the running backs up in the formation and also pass to them.”

Richardson, who is in the mode of visiting programs and nowhere close to making a decision, said he believes the Cyclones will be in the picture until the end.

“I’m just having fun with the process,” he said. “I may be cutting them down a little bit too. Right now, I’m just focused on school. I’m also doing my research on different colleges, especially Iowa State, to see what I like education-wise. I love the coaches already and they’re amazing. It’s an honor to be recruited by those guys. They’re on my top list right now.”
