The night prior to his team’s game at Oklahoma State, Iowa State assistant coach Alex Golesh got a look at some top preps from around the area. One of the prospects that caught his eye, a Class of 2019 prospect, recently picked up a Cyclone offer.

Norman North standout Cole Mashburn, a sophomore teammate of Cyclone Class of 2017 commit Charlie Kolar, stood out in his team’s game against Southmoore back on October 7th. A short time later, the linebacker/defensive end recruit was in touch with Golesh.

“(Coach Golesh) came to one of our games to look at Charlie (Kolar) and Drake Stoops, and I think they just ended up looking at me a little bit,” said Mashburn. “I played alright that game and they started looking at me from there.

“One day, my coach just told me to call Coach Golesh and he offered me a scholarship. He said he saw a lot of potential in me and saw what I could become as a player. He liked what he saw at Southmoore and after the coaching staff evaluated a few more games, they decided to offer me.”

The 6-foot-3, 220-pound Mashburn won’t sign a national letter-of-intent until February of 2019, but already has an offer from Memphis to go with the one he collected from I-State. He said Oklahoma, Alabama, Clemson, Texas-San Antonio and UCF have also been in communication.

Since his recruitment picked up last month, Mashburn has done his research on the Cyclones and likes what he’s heard.

“It’s a really cool college,” he said. “Charlie has talked to me a little bit about it. He’s told me they’re not only building a good football program, but it’s also a good academic school which my parents like as well. I really appreciate them going ahead and giving me an opportunity to play there.”

Mashburn appears destined for one of two positions at the next level, depending on how his frame develops over the next two years.

“Coach Golesh said it just depends on how I grow and if I get bigger or taller, combined with my speed development,” Mashburn said. “If I get bigger, I will probably move to a weak-side defensive end.”

Next up is an unofficial visit, which Mashburn has yet to play. He is targeting a Junior Day or camp visit in 2017.

“I’m still young and am really early in the process, but I really do like Iowa State and Memphis,” he said. “I’m looking into both of those schools.”
