Tight end is a position of need for Iowa State in its 2017 high school recruiting effort and to that end, the Cyclones have tendered a number of scholarship offers. One of the recent offers to go out was the first received by Youngstown (Ohio) Boardman product Travis Koontz.
The 6-foot-5, 235-pound Koontz received his offer via ISU assistant coach Alex Golesh this week. Koontz said he is in the process of learning more about I-State and its football operation.
“I know it’s a great program and they have tradition, I like it,” Koontz said about Iowa State. “I want to make my way out there sometime. I have to see what my mom thinks about taking a visit pretty soon.”
Koontz is in the midst of taking visits to a pair of other programs that not yet offered him – Penn State and Bowling Green. He said he has already visit Penn State once and plans to go back this weekend and is he coming off a visit to Bowling Green this past Saturday.
The Cyclones are looking for versatile tight ends that can line up in a variety of formations and be utilized in a variety of ways. Koontz fits the mold as he has played wide receiver in high school and developed that skill set, while also growing into a frame that will give him to size needed to be an attached tight end at times in college.
Koontz said he does not have a timeline in mind for making a decision on where he would like to attend college and continue his football career.
