About the officiating tonight. Very curious about whether this 3-man crew has worked together before and even more so about what the officials' report to the league will be about the game, and what the league's review of the crew's performance will say. Of course these reports won't ever be available for public review.
The two older guys on the crew were IMO steady and consistent for most of the game and unobtrusive, but the younger guy was wild! He appeared to call a very inconsistent game and to go out of his way to put Webber in his place demonstrably, appearing close to T-ing him up IMO, and earned some strong reactions later from Fred too. At the start of the second half he appeared to give Georges an ear full in response to something Georges said to him or asked. To his credit, Georges appeared to quickly realize he had potentially disturbed a madman and shut up.
But the really interesting thing was, one of the other officials spent considerable time apparently trying to 'coach up' the young, hot ego-ridden guy. He also went to the KSU huddle after the young guy escorted Webber back to the sidelines following Webber's coming out to the middle of the floor to talk with him about a questionable call in ISU's favor. (Time was out.) I'd bet the older official apologized/explained that the young guy didn't speak for the crew. The young guy treated Fred similarly later in the game in a similar situation. I was afraid he was going to 'T' Fred up then, too, but I think Fred realized what a hot head he was and backed away just in time. This guy also called the double T on Hogue and a KSU player, apparently for trash talking!
Finally, on the crucial out-of-bounds possession reversal that gave the ball to ISU, the hot headed official first called it KSU's ball, but had his call over ridden by the other older guy and the one who had been 'coaching' the young official. Then the young buck initially signaled with a big gesture KSU's ball but caught himself up short and pivoted his call to indicate ISU's. Other than this over-ruling review, I had the impression that the other two officials had given up on their hot-headed compatriot in the second half.
I thought this drama was a pretty entertaining and sorry side story to the game.
