The highest-rated recruit in Iowa State’s 2017 recruiting class was on campus over the weekend for his official visit and said the experience strengthened his commitment.
Clinton (Miss.) four-star athlete Kam White, who has a 5.8 Rivals rating, was making his second trip to Ames of the recruiting process. The 6-foot-2, 189-pound senior said this trip was to get his parents even more sold on the place.
“I wasn’t really looking at too much stuff in particular, I was just going in to have another visit,” said White. “Was it really like it was the first time? I wanted my family to go with me and to see if they liked it. I wanted to see how it was when there was a game going on. The atmosphere in the stadium was crazy. The tailgating, fans and student section were crazy. It was more than what we expected.”
White, who will likely be pegged to play safety at the next level, was hosted by fellow Cyclone defensive back D’Andre Payne.
“He just asked if I had a good time and explained a couple things that have been going on differently at Iowa State,” White said. “There were a couple good things. The coaches are turning things around. Even though they lost, it’s going to take them working some more and doing things.”
One of four official visits to take in the Cyclones’ season opener against Northern Iowa, White’s stay wrapped up with a Sunday morning meal at head coach Matt Campbell’s house.
“Everything was pretty chill,” White said. “We had breakfast with the coaches. I was eating with the recruits and the coaches were in with my parents, making them feel comfortable and talking about the program. Coach Campbell reassured us why he wants me there. He said he needs what I bring to the table. He wants me to keep recruiting for him.”
With a few days to reflect on his official visit to I-State, White said it solidified his commitment even more.
“It reaffirmed it,” he said. “This was really for my parents. I loved the visit the first time and I really wanted my parents to go up there to see what it was like during game time.”
White chose the Cyclones this summer over the likes of Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, Minnesota, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Tennessee.
