Heard today that former Hawkeye BB player and successful high school coach Murray Wier has passed.
Wier had been a first team all-american as a senior and played professionally for a number of years.
He became coach at Waterloo East and led the team to a state championship in 1974.
I have not researched this, but I am guessing Wier and Johnny Orr may have been playing about the same time in what would have been the early years of the NBA.
Edit: Just checked Google and found that Wier and Orr both played for the Waterloo Hawks in 1950 and both quit about the same time to take high school coaching jobs, Wier in Waterloo and Orr in Dubuque.
