A three-star JUCO defensive back from the southwest is planning to make a commitment early next month, but indicates he will still plan to take an Iowa State official visit no matter where he announces to.
Arizona Western's Keisean Nixon hasn't forgotten that the Cyclones gave him his first offer to open the recruiting process, and that's one of the factors that has kept the program in the running. He has already booked an official visit to Iowa State for the weekend of September 24th.
"I like the coaching staff," said Nixon, who also has Arkansas, California and Colorado State in his mix.
"Iowa State was my first offer and that was big for me. They're recruiting me the hardest out of my schools, so that's been huge. I also like the fact they play in the Big 12. All of the schools are selling me the same thing, which is early playing time. I'm a JUCO and they're not going to offer me if they can't think I play right away."
With the countdown on until his planned commitment date of August 1st, the 6-foot-0, 195-pound Nixon says he's spoken frequently with the Cyclones' head coach Matt Campbell.
"I talked to him yesterday and he's taken on a pretty big role in my recruitment," Nixon said. "He said he can't wait to get me up there on my official visit. He's excited. Everybody is trying to get me right now. I've never been to Iowa and that will be one of my big visits."
In addition to Nixon's relationship to the coaching staff, there's his close friendship with current I-State defensive back D'Andre Payne.
"My boy D-Payne plays nickel, so I'll probably play outside," Nixon said. "I just want to get on the field no matter where it's at. Getting the chance to play with him again would be big for me. He was my roommate when he was here at Arizona Western. He really likes it a lot at Iowa State."
Even if the Cyclones are to get a commitment from Nixon in a few weeks, they will need to keep him in the fold after he takes his other trips.
"I'm still going to take all five of my visits no matter where I'm committed," Nixon said. "My recruitment is still going to be open. Right now if I had to pick a leader, it would probably be Arkansas. Iowa State would probably be number two. Those are the schools that are recruiting me the hardest."
Nixon has scheduled a visit to Colorado State on July 29th, but has yet to book any trips to Arkansas and California.
