I was born and raised in Ames since 1970. I've seen many coaches come and go. I thought we should've kept coach Rhoads for one more year. We were really close to winning the following games: OK State, Iowa, K State, Toledo, and maybe win the West Virginia Game. That would've put us at 8 wins. Would've been incredible season! The problem... it was not And we lost. And lost... With all the skill positions back next year, Rhoads would've went to a bowl game in 2016.
All those close loses can become big/close wins next year.
Now that my wish to keep Rhoads is no longer. I'm hoping that we really step it up and hire a top notch/name coach that can walk into a recruits house and have the wow factor. I'll be very upset if we hire a up and coming coach from a mid major team. Or, even an assistant that know body knows.
I'm convinced an average or below average coach will always look good with great athletes! The way to get great athletes is have a name or face that everyone will want to play for. A name where Mom and Dad say... WOW... I want my sone to play for him.
Be proactive in our hire process... Think out of the box.
1.) Payton Manning ( It worked for Harbaugh @ Stanford) Pay the $4-5 Million. Not sure he would make that in broadcasting. He probably is thinking about retiring soon.
I know thats a long shot... And he's probably not the one... But lets great creative in this process and think of other WOW hires. Someone, other schools are not even thinking of...
If we want to be GREAT then go after BEST.
Keep in mind this is one opinion of many... And its my 2 bits Go Cyclones!!!!
