To Coach Prohm and the Iowa State Men’s Basketball Team:
To say I was upset and embarrassed by that dismal performance Thursday night is an understatement.
I am a proud alumnus of our fine institution, and promote and defend it with every fiber of my being. I have to live and work with the kind whose allegiance, for whatever reason, is to the other side. They look for every opportunity to mock, ridicule, and humiliate anything remotely connected with Iowa State: the University, our athletics teams, and Ames, Iowa.
When we take to the field of competition against them, the pride, honor and glory of our dear institution and all its fans and alumni is at stake. This mission cannot be taken lightly. More than any other competition, the outcomes of games in this rivalry impact the spirit and morale of our constituents and are remembered for years to come.
In other words, there is no room whatsoever to bring anything less than the absolute best effort one has to offer – to be fully prepared and execute at the highest level of capacity.
You failed miserably in that task Thursday night. We expected you to do everything in your power to come away victorious, or leave your “blood on the floor trying”. Instead we witnessed a total lackadaisical, lethargic, and uninspired effort that in no way matched the desire and intensity of our less talented and experienced, but far more motivated adversaries.
Now we must live with the consequences – not only for the next year until we have a chance at redemption (should we be sufficiently prepared and motivated), but we will never know the opportunities that could have availed themselves in victory.
You can screw around and lose to the likes of a Cincinnati if you must; but you must never, ever represent our prideful institution and its fans against our hated rival with such a miserable performance ever again. Our alumni, fans and administration deserve better and must hold you accountable.
